The kidneys perform many important functions, including the removal of waste products and excess fluids, and the critical regulation of the body's protein, sodium and potassium levels. If the kidneys aren't working well, they don't filter blood properly, which means harmful substances can accumulate in the blood. Normal kidney function is necessary to maintain a stable balance of body chemicals.
